Workin' hard

Just thought this was funny;

On the left is state representative Barbara Lambert (CT-118th) and on the right is state representative Jack F. Hennessy (CT-127th). First of all, how and why does the Connecticut State Assembly have at minimum 127 districts?

The Next Step In Space Flight (warning; nerd content)

Tuesday NASA is scheduled to attempt the first launch of its new Ares I-X rocket. This is the first time in 34 years a new vehicle has been on the launch pad at NASA. The Ares I-X is line to be the booster for the CEV that will replace the retiring shuttle fleet. The CEV, or Crew Exploration Vehicle, will carry astronauts to orbit, the International Space Station, and beyond. It is scheduled to begin service in 2015. Currently NASA's space plans and budget are under review by the Obama Administration and the fate of manned flight is uncertain.

UPDATE 2: Launch video; http://www.space.com/common/media/video/player.php?videoRef=SP_091028_ares_launch

Update: Tuesday launch scrubbed due to weather, will try again Wednesday.

Below are some cool photos from NASA today (click to enlarge).

Judgement Week

As anyone with any knowledge of Tigers baseball could have predicted 155 games ago, it all comes down to this week. 4 game set again the Twins, 3 game set against the White Sox. Win this week, win the division. My heart is already pumping at an elevated rate.

GO GET 'EM TIGERS!

America's Birthday

On July 2nd, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted to declare the colonies independent from the British crown and established itself as a free and independent state. And thus, this nation was born.

I find this to be a good rendition of a great song;

Made in the U.S.A.

It's no secret that it's becoming more and more difficult to find products manufactured in the U.S.A, and there are valid arguments on why that is ok and valid arguments for why it is bad. But which ever side of the argument you come down on, this is a useful site for helping you determine which products you want to buy;

Obama Watch #8: Upping the Ante

Today the story circulating out of Washington is that President Barack Obama will enact tougher fuel standards on automobiles. Auto manufactures will have to increase their fuel standards by 30% (form 27.5mpg to 42mpg on cars and 24mpg to 26.2mpg on light trucks) by 2016. This makes me seriously question President Obama's commitment to helping revive the US Car Industry. First let me say this; Yes, reducing pollution in our air is a good thing. And yes, cars with better fuel economies would be a good thing. So here comes the big however;

However, product research, development, and implementation does not happen over night, especially not in the auto industry. In order to meet these deadlines the auto makers will have to start (or accelerate) this process...immediately. This will require addition funds and resources to be allocated towards this effort resulting in additional costs for the consumer at the dealer and making products less competitive. With the US automakers flirting with bankruptcy, this added hurdle, to me, seems ill timed. I would much rather see this nation focus on making our auto makers (which employ over 1,000,000 workers) profitable first so they can then devote the proper (and available) resources towards meeting these standards.
